Remembering David Baker

David N. Baker, Indiana University distinguished professor of music and Jazz Studies Department chair emeritus, died in March at age 84.

Baker was on the faculty of the IU music school since 1966, and he founded its Jazz Studies program. Many of his students went on to successful jazz careers.

A composer, multi-instrumentalist, and arranger, Baker's body of work includes more than 65 recordings, 70 books, and 400 articles. He co-founded the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and served as its conductor and musical and artistic director.
