Noon Edition

Novelist and Journalist Amitav Ghosh

Amitav Ghosh with white hair, wearing black horn-rimmed glasses, open necked blue-and-white checked shirt, and dark gray cardigan sweater.

Before I was an anthropologist I was a journalist, and that is very much a part of the way I write. I pay close attention to what is happening around me.

Amitav Ghosh's novels include The Circle of Reason, The Calcutta Chromosome, The Hungry Tide, Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke, and Flood of Fire—the final volume of the Ibis trilogy, which is set in the 1830s and encapsulates the colonial history of the East.

Ghosh’s non-fiction books include In an Antique Land and The Imam and the Indian, a collection of essays on fundamentalism, Egyptian culture, and literature.
