A Preview of the Monroe County Budget Hearings

Monroe County Council Members are sticking to their claim they over-budgeted last year, leading to worries of layoffs this year. However, after the Council learned last month it would receive an extra $900,000, members nixed any talk of pink slips. County Council President Vic Kelson defends the once-definitive threat of job cuts by saying he's worried about the county's budget over the course of several years.

"It is definitely a roller coast ride for everyone involved," Kelson said. "But our job is the difficult job of balancing priorities and making sure over the long run that five years from now we're not going to be in a cash hole."

The Council has nearly 1 million extra dollars to spend this year because of incorrect property valuations by other taxing units in the county.
