The Challenges Of Getting An Education While Homeless

(WFIU/WTIU News)

Noon Edition airs on Fridays at noon on WFIU.

Those facing housing insecurity can face additional barriers to doing well and ultimately graduating from higher education institutions. But the problems could start earlier than that.

The Indiana Department of Education tracked 19,173 homeless students in public schools during the 2014-15 school year, an increase from 17,911 students the year before.

In their 2018 survery, the Wisconsin HOPE Lab found that 12 percent of community college students and 9 percent of university students were affected by homelessness.

This week on Noon Edition, our panel talks about the challenges of getting an education while homeless and what resources exist to help students succeed.

Hosts Bob Zaltsberg and Joe Hren talk to one man who earned two associate's degrees at Ivy Tech Community College while experiencing homelessness, and several people working to make success more attainable to students like him.

Guests:

Deepali Jani, McKinney-Vento Homeless Education State Coordinator, Indiana Department of Education

Forrest Gilmore, Executive Director, Shalom Community Center

James Mynatt, Ivy Tech Community College graduate

Melissa Paneto, Residential Coordinator, Stepping Stones
