Oscar Peterson: More Remembrances and Reactions, Plus More News From Mosaic

As expected, many more Oscar Peterson articles and tributes have appeared in the past two days. Here are a few of them:

New York Times obituary

Steve Voce in the Independent

Lots of love and spirited dissension in this Organissimo discussion.

Terry Teachout weighs in.

Marc Myers' thoughts on O.P.

Also check out Marc's marvelous writeup on singer Jackie Paris and the film about his life. The second Night Lights show I ever did, "Charlie Parker's Favorite Singer," was about Paris, although we haven't yet archived it on this site. Another underappreciated talent; as usual, Marc's post is full of revelatory detail.

Department of happier news, via Mosaic Records: they'll be issuing a 4-CD set of Lester Young with Count Basie, encompassing the years of 1936-1940. The big news? The set will include "thirteen previously unissued alternate takes by the Basie band with Pres, recently discovered in the SonyBMG vaults!" (Hold the political puns, Jeeves, and bring me my smelling salts.) Also coming out very, very soon-as in two weeks: the Woody Herman Phillips Select set, featuring five of the hard-swinging mid-1960s Herman band's LPs.
