Noon Edition

New Stations for Night Lights, another Duke Ellington Mosaic box, and Marc Myers' interview with Bud Shank

*Several radio stations around the country are adding Night Lights to their weekly lineup. KMHD-Portland, Oregon will be carrying the program at 8 p.m. PDT on Monday evenings. KPBX-Spokane Public Radio, WA is now airing the program Wednesdays at 11 p.m. PDT. Beginning May 10, KOSU-Oklahoma Public Radio will broadcast Night Lights on Saturday evenings at 11 p.m. CDT. And KMBH/KHID-McAllen and Brownsville, Texas will soon be airing the show as well (time to be determined). We'll have a "where to hear it" page up soon on this site, though you can always catch the program after broadcast in the Night Lights archives.

*Mosaic Records has confirmed that we'll be seeing a box-set of Duke Ellington's 1930s Columbia-label big-band recordings "in about a year." This will make for a great companion volume to the small-group sessions collection from the same period that Mosaic put out last year; much of Ellington's late-1930s catalogue has been unavailable recently on CD.

*Jazzwax blogger Marc Myers continues his perpetual hot streak with a three-part interview series featuring saxophonist Bud Shank. Shank, who's known to be generally reticent about his early career, speaks at length about the Brazilliance albums that he recorded in the early 1950s with guitarist Laurindo Almeida and their influence upon the bossa nova sound. Part 1 and Part 2 are already posted, with a third part to follow. In the course of the interview Shank talks about some of the recordings he made for the West Coast Nocturne label; you can hear some of that music in the previous Night Lights program The Nocturne Records Story.
