For the first time since the Indiana University School of Dentistry was established 133 years ago, more women have enrolled in the program than men. Sixty women were accepted this year to the dentistry program compared to 44 men.
IU School of Dentistry Dean John Williams says the national trend shows more women are entering all scientific professions, and dentistry is no exception.
“We look for a core of biomedical sciences knowledge and expertise,” Williams says. “I think that as opportunities have been open for women in the sciences, that we’re seeing that manifestation in their application to dentistry.”
The class that is entering the dentistry school this year will graduate in 2016.
