Vigo County Commission To Decide On Oil Drilling Issue

The Vigo County Planning Commission says it will decide Monday whether to allow oil drilling on a resident's property.

The Vigo County Planning Commission is meeting Monday to decide whether to rezone property for oil drilling. Resident Hunter von Leer is requesting the county rezone his 93-acre property north of Hawthorne Park to allow for gas and oil well exploration.

But the Planning Commission’s executive director Jeremy Weir says residents have expressed concerns about potential problems including odor, groundwater issues, truck traffic and aesthetics.

“The neighborhoods concerns, not to speak for them completely, but what I took from their expression was that the proposed well if it was to be there and the tanking and utilization of that if oil was to be found would have impacts that would creep past the property boundaries,” he says.

Weir says he hopes the commissioners can find a solution that satisfies von Leer and the other residents.
