Video: Lily And Madeleine’s Backstage A Cappella Performance

Lily & Madeleine is a sister duo from Indianapolis that creates simple but beautiful music through their vocal harmonies.

After releasing a successful EP earlier this year, Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz decided to record their first full-length album, which is scheduled to be released October 29.

Lily & Madeleine performed at the Lotus World Music & Arts Festival on Saturday with a little help from cellist Ruth Marshall. But before the performance, Lily & Madeleine gave us a private a cappella performance of And Tonight, one of the songs that will be on their new album.

Prior to this school year, Lily and Madeleine say they played together nearly every day, whether for practice or just to wind down from the school day. But this year, Madeleine is a freshman at Indiana University in Bloomington, while Lily is still a junior in high school in Indianapolis.

“We haven’t had a chance to come together and write that much,” Madeleine said in an interview during the group’s soundcheck.

Lily says that hasn’t changed their music so far because they are not under much pressure to write as they wait for their album’s release. Even after the release, though, the two don’t seem worried. Despite the world-renowned reputation of IU’s Jacob’s School of Music, Madeleine isn’t enrolled in the school, saying she doesn’t want to pursue any music without Lily.

And when it comes to actually making music, the two have a connection.

“Lily and I are so in tune with each other, I can just figure out a high harmony,” Madeleine says. “She’ll just keep going with the melody and she’ll just follow me. We don’t even have to talk about it. Sometimes we just know where the other one’s going to go.”

“We’ve always been really close sisters,” Lily adds. “We don’t fight, so I guess we just work well together.”
