Lightning strikes over Bloomington during a thunderstorm.

Pop-up thunderstorms across area brought quarter inch hail 4 miles north of Martinsville. It’s 96 degrees in Bloomington, heat index at 99.

Hail to 1.5 inches in diameter, thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 MPH and the possibility of dangerous lighting have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a thunderstorm watch for northern and eastern Indiana until 9 PM.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service say daytime heating may lead to showers and thunderstorms with severe storms possible in the afternoon.

A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 PM due to expected heat index values near 105. More showers and thunderstorms will be possible tonight as a cold front approaches from the Great Lakes.
