Wayne County Coroner Ron Stevens says he recently saw the county's 49th confirmed opioid-related death for 2017. There were 44 opioid-related deaths in 2016.
The staff in the Coroner's office are contract employees, and most make less than minimum wage despite the fact that they require specialized training.
Beginning January 1, officials will no longer accept paper death certificates. The change is expected to improve accuracy.
