A bronze statue of Larry Bird will be on display tonight at the Indiana Pacers play their season opener. The 15-foot tall statue was revealed today.
The piece will eventually be placed on the Indiana State University campus where Bird started his college career.
The idea for a statue started with an ISU student who saw a statue of Bird’s old time rival Magic Johnson at Michigan State’s campus.
He thought ISU needed a similar tribute to its basketball legend.
“He is by far our best known alumi and also as a student athlete as well as professional athlete and his success in his industry which is professional basketball,” ISU Foundation President Ron Carpenter says. “It’s just a great way to honor probably, like I said Indiana States favorite son.”
Bird is the only person to win NBA Player of the Year, NBA Coach of the Year and NBA Executive of the Year.
The official unveiling of the Bird statue at ISU is scheduled for November 9.
