Police, Highway Crews Respond To Difficult Road Conditions

Monroe County highway crews work throughout the day to make sure roads are clear and safe.

If you’re headed out on the roads this weekend, state police say give yourself some extra time.

Because of today’s ice and snowstorm, police responded to several slide-offs and crashes, and assisted a few stalled or abandoned vehicles. They expect the number of incidents to rise as it continues to snow.

Sgt. Curt Durnil is the Public Information Officer for the State Police post in Bloomington. He recommends making sure cars have at least half a tank of gas and keeping supplies like blankets and snacks in case of an emergency.

“Think about what would you need if your car suddenly became stranded and you had no other resources.”

“We ask folks to think about what would you need if your car suddenly became stranded, and you had no other resources,” he says.

But, Durnil says it’s best to stay home this weekend if you can.

“Anytime you have severe weather like this, it always helps when schools close, even when the downtown businesses close early or city government, non-essential personnel don’t show up for work,” he says.

Monroe County highway crews started their days at 3:30 Friday morning to clear and pre-treat roads.

Gary Hawkins is the Assistant Supervisor for the Monroe County Highway Department. He says they start preparing for the winter season in October. The department has 29 drivers.

Hawkins says their route takes about eight hours to fully clear once the snow stops. In the meantime, he warns drivers to exercise caution.

“I just want to tell everybody to slow down, just give us the time and be patient,” he says.

A winter storm warning and advisory are in effect until 10 tonight. Crews expect more snow Sunday night going into Monday.
