Red Cross Keeping Shelters Open As Needed

The Owen County YMCA is serving as a warming shelter.

Thousands of people across Indiana have been without power after a winter storm arrived Sunday night, although that number is quickly dropping.

Duke Energy reports just more than 600 of its customers were experiencing outages at 3 p.m. today.

American Red Cross volunteers have set up warming shelters around the state and expect people will soon be able to return home.

The shelter at the Owen County YMCA has housed about 30 people over the past two days.

American Red Cross District Disaster Program Manager Maria Carrasquillo says the shelter will stay open as long as it’s needed.

“Several families have spent two nights with us and we’ll probably be open again tonight,” she says.

Carrasquillo says people are going home today as their power comes back on.

Duke Energy is reporting only a handful of outages in Owen County.
