Purdue Announces Name Of Controversial Online University

Purdue University officials have announced the name of a new online university designed for working adults.

The online university was nicknamed NewU after Purdue acquired the program, formerly known as Kaplan University. The official name will be Purdue University Global.

Purdue’s acquisition of for-profit Kaplan has been marked with controversy ever since it was announced last April. Faculty members worry the deal will tarnish Purdue’s reputation and diminish the value of a Purdue degree. But Purdue President Mitch Daniels and other higher education officials have said the acquisition is a way to increase education access to a population of adults that desperately needs it.

According to a press release, Purdue University and Purdue NewU Trustees approved the new name after “extensive qualitative and quantitative research,” with input from faculty, staff, students and alumni of both institutions.

“Our campuses are typically named after the physical locations where they hold classes. Purdue University Global can be accessed from anywhere in the world, at any time,” Daniels said in a statement. “The name proved appealing and meaningful to our various stakeholders – most importantly prospective students.”

The Purdue-Kaplan acquisition awaits final approval from the Higher Learning Commission, the accrediting body of both institutions. That’s expected to happen on Feb.22, according to the press release. The new name takes effect after the HLC gives approval.
