City officials are planning for the grand re-opening of a historic Paoli Bridge nearly two years after it was damaged.

The bridge has been closed since a semi tried to cross it on Christmas Day in 2015.

The plan originally was to have it reopen by August of this year. There’ve been some delays, but Orange County Commissioner Richard Dixon says the restoration project is nearly complete.

“Our intent, and weather is going to play a factor here, but our intent is to try to have that bridge open sometime in the first part of January by the very least,” Dixon says.

Dixon says the last step is installing reinforced entryways on both sides of the bridge that will prevent damage from any over-sized vehicles in the future.

Estimates put the cost of the repairs at about three-quarters of a million dollars.

Earlier this year, the driver who damaged the bridge pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving and three infractions. A judge sentenced her to spend up to 180 days in jail.
