Pence: Same-Sex Marriage Stance Not A Distraction For GOP

Gov. Pence met with governors in Washington, D.C. to discuss how to solve problems at the state level.

Indiana Republican Party convention delegates this weekend will consider the party platform and could be facing a fight over potential language regarding same-sex marriage.

The GOP platform is a statement about the party’s message on a variety of social, fiscal and political issues.

Proposed language this year strongly backs traditional marriage as the foundation of society while acknowledging the increasing diversity of families.

Governor Mike Pence today wouldn’t directly address the issue of marriage within the platform but says he supports the platform overall.

“I believe it lays out a vision for the future and includes elements that I support and also addresses those in the right and proper way,” says Pence.

Still, Pence says he doesn’t consider the discussion a distraction for the party.

“I believe it’s important when the party comes together that we lay out our vision for the people of Indiana. A platform is the way that we do that.”

Pence will give a speech at the convention Saturday in which he’ll talk about the momentum Indiana has built through Republican leadership.

Democrats have been critical of the GOP for continuing to advance what they call a policy of exclusion.
