UPDATE: Power Restored To IU Buildings After Friday Morning Outage

9:01 p.m.

Indiana University officials are giving the "all clear" message through the university's notify system. The final update indicates power has been restored and some systems may still be restarting.

Further campus issues should be reported to facility operations at 812-855-8728.

5:20 p.m.

Indiana University officials say 55 campus buildings lost power Friday and have clarified the cause of the outage.

IU spokesman Chuck Carney says the university expects all buildings to have power by 6:30 p.m. or soon after.

Carney says the outage started when an incident at a Duke Energy substation on South Rogers Street caused there to be an "oversurge" at IU's power distribution center.

"That caused the arc and the failure at the distribution center on campus which caused a small fire and melted the cable," Carney wrote in an email.

3:50 p.m.

Indiana University spokesman Chuck Carney says crews are working to get the power back on in around 30 campus buildings.

He says they're prioritizing the Collins Living-Learning Center and buildings with lab animals, and they expect power in most buildings to be back on within four to six hours.

3:25 p.m.

Indiana University advised students and staff that power may not be restored in some campus buildings until after 5 p.m. Friday.

An IU Notify email sent just after 3:00 p.m. says university employees who lost working time due to the outage are covered under the university's adverse working conditions policy.

According to Duke Energy, a faulty IU cable caused a power outage that affected 47 buildings on the IU-Bloomington campus. The outage was first reported around 10:14 a.m. and power was restored in some buildings by 11:30 a.m.

IU spokesman Chuck Carney says only 15 buildings have regained power.

Correction: A previous version of this story stated that only 15 buildings remained without power. Seventeen is the number of buildings currently with power.

1:45 p.m.

Duke Energy officials say the Friday morning power outage that affected multiple campus buildings was because of faulty IU equipment.

Duke spokesman Lew Middleton says the utility traced the problem to a bad underground cable. He says IU crews are working on it and the cable will take 24 hours to repair.

The timeline for power restoration on campus is unclear.

12:40 p.m.

Some buildings still remain without power, including Lilly Library and parts of Wells Library.

Indiana University officials say they're getting more information from Duke Energy at this time and will have an update soon.

Dining concepts at the Indiana Memorial Union reported at noon that they were still shut down because they had no power.

11:45 p.m.

At least 40 buildings on Indiana University’s Bloomington campus were without power for more than an hour Friday morning.

IU says Duke’s three power distribution centers on South Rogers went down – causing the outage, which started around 10:14 a.m.

In some buildings, power was restored around 11:30 a.m. IU's Wells Library tweeted that after the building's power came back on, it went off again.

At Lilly Library, power had not yet been restored as of yet 12:15 p.m.

It's unclear how many IU buildings are still without power.

Some professors cancelled classes. But IU is telling students they should check with their instructors about the status of their classes.

Duke Energy spokesman Lew Middleton says the utility is working to determine the cause of the outage.

"This appears to be at least a combination of partly of our equipment and part of IU’s equipment," he says. "We don’t know exactly for sure and we are investigating that right now."

He says Duke has multiple crews working in Bloomington.

"We’ve got a crew of about two or three that are out there right now and they are working with the people at the university as well, the maintenance people, to try and figure out -- to get to the bottom of this outage," Middleton says.

He says it's going to take some time for the utility to determine the cause of the outage.

"Don't get too excited because it could still go back out," Middleton said in an interview.

IU sent an emergency alert about the power outage via its "IU Notify" system at 11:45 a.m., more than an hour after the power initially went out in many buildings.

11:20 a.m.

IU spokesman Chuck Carney says the outage occurred when three power distribution centers on South Rogers Street went down at 10:14 a.m.

He says the number of buildings affected has increased to 40.

11:15 a.m.

According to Duke Energy's outages map, the utility estimates power will be restored around 2:30 p.m.

11:03 a.m.

Duke Energy's outages map now shows some power outages on IU Bloomington's campus.

The website says crews are en route. It says the outages were first reported at 10:14 a.m. and no data is available on the cause of the outages.

10:55 a.m.

IU's public safety Twitter account tweeted that there's no estimate on when power will be restored.

10:45 a.m.

IU spokesman Chuck Carney says the outage is due to a problem with a Duke Energy power substation and has affected 20 buildings on campus.

IUPD also confirmed that information.

The outage affecting IU-Bloomington is not listed on Duke Energy's outages website.

The Radio-Television Services Building, the Student Recreational Sports Center, the Indiana Memorial Union, the East Tower of Wells Library and the School of Public Health are confirmed as being affected by the outage.

10:40 a.m.

Responding to a callout, several Twitter users have shared their locations where there is no power.

10:33 a.m.

Indiana University's Twitter account shared that the university was aware of the reports of power outages and was working to determine the cause and get power back on as soon as possible.

10:20 a.m.

At about 10 a.m. on Friday, power went out at several IU-Bloomington campus buildings, including the Radio-Television Services Building, where WFIU and WTIU News is headquartered.

IU spokesman Chuck Carney says he doesn't know how widespread the outage is. He says he doesn't know the cause of the outage.

Students are also reporting power outages in some classrooms across the campus.

Herman B Wells Library's Twitter account shared that the building had lost power in the East Tower and crews were working on determining the cause.

This story will be updated.
