Workers have completed putting the finishing touches on a $5 million renovation to the Monroe County courthouse.

The changes are subtle with $4 million spent updating the structural integrity of the building and another million spent bringing its capabilities into the 21st century. New steel beams are hidden by a terrazzo floor and faux marble columns conceal a myriad of wires and cables.

Monroe County Commissioner’s Administrator Jason Carnes says work began on the one hundred year-old building, after employees began complaining about weaknesses in the building structure.

“We had an employee one day who noticed that her chair kind of dipped when she was wheeling back and then we peeled up the carpet, peeled up some concrete and then that’s when we found out the big problem,” he says.

County officials say the outcome is a more energy efficient and modernized seat for city government. On Thursday, county offices invited the public to attend an open house, showcasing the renovations.

Recently elected State Senator Mark Stoops says although most of the work was structural, the restoration made some major improvements.

“Well, it’s actually sad that, you know, within a month of moving into the new offices at the courthouse that I’ll be shifting back out,” he says. “But the statehouse is beautiful as well. I think the courthouse reminds me a lot of the statehouse, just on a smaller scale.”

The courthouse is home to several county offices and is again open to the public during normal business hours.
