Two legislative leaders are refuting a claim lawmakers would try to sneak some sort of bill through the General Assembly next month.
In a four-and-a-half minute video posted on YouTube and at his group's website on Wednesday, Advance America Executive Director Eric Miller claimed legislative leaders were preparing a so-called "sneak attack" on Organization Day for the legislature Nov. 17.
While Nov. 17 is the first official day of a legislative session, it is typically an administrative day and bills are not discussed.
Miller claimed that was not the case this year. He said sources had informed him of a bill dealing with "sexual activity and children" that would potentially be hurried through both the House and Senate.
Miller has not returned phone calls, and he did not cite a specific bill in the video.
While it is possible for lawmakers to suspend rules and pass bills on Organization Day, House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, said on Twitter that will not happen this year.
"Let me be perfectly clear," the representative tweeted. "There is no 'sneak attack' planned for organization day. A simple phone call would have clarified that."
Senate Majority Leader Brandt Hershman, R-Buck Creek, said the same.
"It is important to have a thoughtful discussion on these issues that reflect all the various opinions and perspectives, and it would be entirely inappropriate for us to do in a one day session," Hershman said. "It is never something we have considered."
Hershman said neither Miller nor any other social conservative group executive had been in touch with him nor other members of the Senate leadership.
Miller is among conservative group leaders who vehemently fought issues related to the LGBT community.
He unsuccessfully pressed for a state constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage before a federal judge ruled that same sex couples could legally marry in Indiana, a ruling eventually confirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Miller was also among those invited by Gov. Mike Pence to the private signing of the state's Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which critics claimed was a push back against gays and lesbians.
Miller was critical of a "fix" later added to RFRA in an effort to make it clear the religious freedom law could not be used as a defense for discrimination by a business owner.
