Kokomo city leaders may have come across Howard County’s oldest home while extending the downtown Industrial Heritage trail. The new trail replaced part of Buckeye Street so the old house would have to come down.
Mayor Greg Goodnight says after the city purchased the house, workers started stripping the siding revealing historic features that couldn’t be ignored.
“We think it was built sometime around 1860 so we’re going to stabilize it before winter gets here, make sure it’s secure,” Goodnight says. “We don’t really have a plan yet, other than that we’re going to keep it as some sort of feature.”
City researchers found horsehair in the plaster that helped date the house. Goodnight says they’ll most likely add a historical marker and continue discussions for its use next year.
