IUPUC interim vice chancellor and dean Jay Howard says he wants to emphasize student retention during his time in his new position. While IUPUI chancellor Charles Bantz is technically the top administrative official of IUPUC, it’s the vice chancellor and dean who leads things on the ground at the Columbus campus. Howard was officially installed as interim vice chancellor July 1, taking over for Nassar Paydar, who left to head-up IU East in Richmond. Howard cites additional faculty members and a ninth consecutive semester of an increased number of students as proof that IUPUC continues to expand. But he says there’s still work to be done, especially on keeping students in school.
Howard is also a member of the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation board of school trustees, and recently completed a year as board president. He says his involvement in K-12 through post-secondary education helps him understand the transitions students go through from high school to college. Howard’s time as interim chancellor will last a year, until an official search for a permanent chancellor gets underway. Howard says he expects to be on the list of candidates.
