The Indiana Department of Transportation says it’s concerned about the deteriorating condition of the state’s Toll Road plazas.
Last week, South Bend Representative David Niezgodski of South Bend wrote a letter to INDOT, calling the dirty bathrooms he encountered while traveling along the Toll Road embarrassing and unacceptable.
INDOT responded this week, saying it agrees with Niezgodski’s assessment.
In June, the Indiana Finance Authority sent a letter to the Indiana Toll Road Concession Company, saying they’d received several complaints about dirty and unsanitary bathrooms.
The ITRCC oversees the service contracts for the operation and maintenance of those travel plazas.
They responded with a letter last week, saying they plan to take over bathroom cleaning duties at the plazas, which could include the hiring of temporary workers or third party cleaning service providers.
They also released a Request for Proposal for completely new travel plazas over the summer.
All of this comes as the ITRCC is engaged in bankruptcy proceedings.
They want to sell the remainder of their 75-year lease on the toll road.
