Pope Francis I waves to a crowd outside the Vatican on the day he was chosen to succeed Pope Benedict XVI.

Hundreds of parishioners are expected to gather for a special mass at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral in Indianapolis today. There Indianapolis Archbishop Joseph Tobin will preside over a noon-time service honoring Pope Francis I.

Tobin says he knows the pope personally. He says Pope Francis I had a trial by fire during his time in Buenos Aires when Argentina was suffering from civil war and economic crises.

“He‘s a very intelligent man, and I think to be an Archbishop of a big city like that you have to delegate,” Tobin says. “It‘s not a one man show, so hopefully he‘s going to bring that spirit of cooperation to his new mission.”

Tobin says he has been in several meetings with the Jesuit man. Tobin will  be among bishops from across the world who will have a formal meeting with Francis at the end of June.

Pope Francis is now the head of an estimated 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide.
