Low Income Earners Are Eligible For Bigger Tax Refunds

Low to moderate income residents in Bloomington can now file their federal and state tax returns free. The United Way of Monroe County is promoting the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Executive Director of United Way of Monroe County, Barry Lessow, said Bloomington residents with a household income of $49,000 or less are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.  Often, Lessow said, families can see their refunds increase from a few dollars to several thousand.

“EITC used to be only for families where there was a child and now it extends to low-income families where there are no children,” Lessow said.

Executive Director of South Central Community Action Program Todd Lare said those who are eligible for EITC can file their taxes and receive 100% of their refund in 10 days or less.

“I’ve seen estimates of up to 1,000 people in the Bloomington area that may not be applying for their earned income tax credit,” Lare said.

Lare said millions of dollars go unclaimed each year because families who are eligible for EITC don’t realize it.
