Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) presented an honorary Purple Heart to the widow of a World War II veteran in Bloomington Friday.

Earl Eberle served in Italy and Southern France during World War II as part of the 45th Infantry.

Young worked closely with Earl Eberle’s son, Frank Eberle, to gain approval for the honorary medal nearly 75 years later.

“It’s important that we find additional ways just to say thank you,” Young says. “Because to the extent we offer gratitude, we create incentives and we increase the chances that the next generation is gonna step up, when their time will invariably come, to protect this great nation.”
