Google Privacy Change Doesn’t Worry IU E-mail Administrators

IU employees will see a 1.5 percent salary increase if trustees approve next year's budget.

The new policy combines data from all of Google’s platforms, including G-mail, Google Plus, and YouTube and governs them under one blanket privacy policy. Indiana University students have the option to use a Google email account provided by the university. A statement from Google says that the new Privacy Policy does not change their contractual agreements with educational enterprises. IU’s chief privacy officer Merri Beth Lavagnino says officials will also look at privacy policies when making arrangements with Google in the future.

“Any time we are entering into a contract with a third party, we do have a process to review the privacy policies and to ensure that they are either in harmony with IU policies or that we can arrange form them to be more amenable to our environment,” she says

However, some opponents say that the change has not been transparent enough. IU, Ball State, Notre Dame, DePauw and Valparaiso University all use Google’s email platform to provide email addresses to their students.
