As some Indiana counties move forward to expand or build convention space, another county is almost ready to announce its plans.

Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight says city and county leaders are about 97 percent ready to move forward on a new downtown convention center.

“We’ve been doing our due diligence in talking with developers and looking at some potential sites and narrowed it down to a specific location,” Goodnight says. “We’re doing preliminary drawings on what that could look like.”

He says Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) will most likely resubmit a bill that would increase the county innkeeper tax from 5 percent to 8 percent.

A similar bill died last legislative session. Goodnight says the additional revenue would help, but is not necessary to proceed with the project.

Goodnight says to expect an announcement in the next few weeks.
