How Food Co-Op Unions Differ From Traditional Unions

When we reported last week that Bloomingfoods workers were trying to unionize, one of the main reactions we kept hearing was "They can do that?"

Easy answer: Yes. Just like any other company, co-op workers have the right to unionize.

But being a co-op does present some unique circumstances, so we turned to Evan Yeats, a spokesman at the United Food and Commercial Workers union to help explain.

The Trend Toward Unionization

Food co-ops have been around for a long time, but the trend of co-ops unionizing started to catch on a couple of years ago.

"It's been going on off and on for a few years now," Yeats says.

Brattleboro in Vermont is one example. It successfully unionized in 2012, and is now represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers union.

Some other co-ops that are currently trying to unionize include Honest Weight Food Co-op in Albany, New York, and Willy Street Co-Op in Madison, Wisconsin.

Yeats says most of the co-ops that have unionized so far are on the northeast and northwest coasts.

Essentially, the process of forming a unionized co-op is the same as unionizing at any other company.

Organizers have to get at least 30 percent of the employees to sign a petition indicating they want to start a union. Those signatures then are submitted with an application to the National Labor Board.

Pending approval, the employees then hold a vote on whether to unionize.

So what's different?

Co-ops Don't Have Traditional Ownership

The most obvious difference between a co-op and a traditional business is that co-ops are owned by their members, and that can include the employees who are trying to form the union.

That also means the employees who want to form the union aren't really just negotiating with the management but the member/owners as well.

And that could mean themselves--at least in a sense.

"Most co-op workers are member/owners as well so they get to participate just as fully in the co-op governing, democratic process just as anybody else," Yeats says.

That means if co-op members got together to decide whether to try to block the union, for example, the employees could be voting in favor of themselves.

But they are treated just like any other member. Their vote does not carry any additional weight.

Member/Owners Ideals' Often Encourage Unions

While it certainly isn't guaranteed, Yeats says he's observed that co-ops wanting to form unions often do so more peacefully than other companies because everyone has the same ideals in mind.

"This results in a much more cooperative process for organizing. Most co-ops are founded not just on making money, but on a set of ideals that involve helping all members of the co-op grow together," Yeats says.

In other words, they are not as focused on making large profits, for example, as they are about providing sustainable lifestyles for themselves, the employees and their neighbors--although it is, of course, the management's job to keep the co-op afloat.

So Why Form a Union?

If co-ops are based on the ideals that benefit the community, including the co-op employees, why would co-ops need a union?

Yeats say it comes down to the fact that the member/owners often aren't very active, and, put simply, don't want to get involved in every detail of the co-op management.

"People tend to sit back because in the day-to-day coop is running well, they just let it go until there is an issue that motivates them. They assume things are being run according to the charter they signed on to when they became members," Yeats says.

In the case of a union, the employees, who are more directly affected by the management's decisions, would have more of a say on issues such as health care plans or wages.
