Farmers Stand To Benefit From Tax Reform Bill

The House version of the tax bill eliminates the estate tax, but the provision may not end up on the final bill.

Farmers can expect some tax relief from several provisions in the U.S. House and Senate tax reform bills.

The American Farm Bureau Federation voiced support for the bills which would lower the tax rate for incorporated farm businesses. The bills also allow farmers to continue tax deductions and credits for legitimate business expenses.

Many farmers will benefit from doubling the estate tax exemption to $22 million.

Farm Bureau tax specialist Pat Wolff says they would still like to see the estate tax eliminated.

“It’s been a long term goal of farmers and ranchers to eliminate the estate tax, and it doesn’t look like we’re going to get the state tax eliminated," Wolff says. "But the exemption should be enough to protect most farms and ranches.”

The bills are being negotiated in conference committee before a final bill is brought forward.
