Ellettsville is considering whether to enact a city-wide smoking ban. The discussions may be put on hold while legislators consider a statewide ban.
At an Ellettsville City Council meeting Monday night, local pediatrician Jason Simmonds called for the council to enact a smoking ban. Simmonds says he represents a group of concerned citizens who would like to see all business ban smoking.
“It’s a public health issue, and that’s the reason why I feel that it’s important to support,” Simmonds says.
Currently, the city has no restrictions on smoking inside businesses, private clubs and bars. Council members say they are willing to consider the proposed ban, but need more information. Council President Scott Oldham says he would need to see a draft of an ordinance before he could decide whether to support it.
“I’d like to see what they’re proposing, like to see what the other council members have to say,” he says. “I mean there are a variety of different, you look across the state, look across the nation, there’s a variety of different ordinances out there, clearly Ellettsville has no desire to really go outside the norm, but the norm is so far across the board, you have to know what you’re looking at before you vote.”
A statewide smoking ban has passed the Indiana House for a sixth consecutive session and is under consideration by the state Senate. Simmonds says Ellettsville shouldn’t wait on the state and instead should take action on a citywide ban now.
