The owner of Bloomington's Eagle Pointe Golf Resort is facing check deception charges stemming from checks paid through his company, Pointe Properties, LLC.
In a probable cause affidavit, Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Jeffrey Ripley says Doug Thomas wrote seven checks knowing that his bank account did not have sufficient funds. The checks were written between April and August of this year and total $5,860.12.
According to court documents, the victims say Thomas made no attempt to compensate them for the bad checks.
Pointe Properties, LLC filed for bankruptcy in September. According to court documents, the company owes at least $465,000 to creditors.
Bankruptcy court documents show Pointe Properties owes about $13,000 to the Indiana Department of Revenue in back taxes. Prior to the bankruptcy filing, the Sheriff's Department shut down Eagle Pointe Golf Resort on two separate occasions for failing to remit sales and payroll taxes to the state.
Former Golf Pro Jamie Haywood told us in August that Thomas fired her shortly after her payroll check bounced. Haywood says Thomas made up for that bounced check in cash.
Thomas faces seven charges of check deception: four Level 6 felony charges and three Class A misdemeanor charges. Check deception at any amount is considered a misdemeanor, but the offense is a Level 6 felony if the check is at least $750 and less than $50,000.
One bounced check from May was written to the Monroe County Health Department for $450. The others were written to individuals.
