Volunteers with the 35th annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Works Project with Habitat for Humanity began construction of 28 new homes Monday in Mishawaka.

After leading a quick devotional, the former president and first lady headed to their worksite.

The Carters say the Mishawaka site might be one of the best organized they’ve seen yet.

“I think Rosalynn has expressed it properly that we’ve never had as good of preparation,” Jimmy says.

Carter also touted the camaraderie between Habitat affiliates in the state.

“I never have seen that before, and I’m afraid if we had a Habitat project in Georgia, which we have had in the past, that the other affiliates in the state wouldn’t want to pitch in and help the ones that were doing the job.”

President and CEO of the Indiana St. Joe. County Habitat, Jim  Williams says the Carter Works Project serves as motivation to build more. He says St. Joe Habitat has secured an additional 7 acres to build more homes, all thanks to the Works Project.
