Engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. is partnering with Guangxi LiuGong Machinery Company to manufacture mid-range engines in southern China.
Columbus Mayor Fred Armstrong recently spent a week in China encouraging similar partnerships. He says he did not influence this deal, but says it will benefit the city of Columbus.
“It happened probably quicker than I had anticipated,” he says. “Cummins is just a number one company, and I’ll tell you what, everybody wants to seemingly partner up with Cummins over there.”
Cummins spokesperson Janet Williams says the company’s success abroad will translate to more growth locally.
“This newest joint venture allows Cummins to enter a new market in China and that really strengthens our position in Asia,” she says. “When we’re strong in global markets like that, that enables us to continue growing and expanding our number of employees at home in places like Columbus and down in Seymour and so forth.”
The new joint-venture will introduce engines designed and localized for construction equipment in China.
