Congressional Candidates Discuss Teacher Jobs Bill

Two Ninth District Congressional candidates were in Bloomington Wednesday to discuss recently passed legislation which would provide funding to prevent teacher layoffs.

The unnamed legislation, House Resolution 1586, was signed into law yesterday. Republican candidate Todd Young says while he is sympathetic to teachers who might have lost their job, he believes the bill is just another part of a fiscally irresponsible congressional agenda.

Democratic incumbent Baron Hill voted for the legislation. He says supporting education is critical to sustainable economic growth.

Young says the legislation will add about $12 billion to the national deficit. According to Hill, it will save about 400 teaching jobs in the Ninth District alone. He says the cost of the bill has been offset by cuts in other federal spending.
