Bloomington Joins Statewide Effort Against Drunk Driving

The Bloomington District of the Indiana State Police is joining forces with over 250 other Indiana law enforcement agencies in the Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest March crackdown. Beginning on March 4th there will be a 17 day mobilization. Sergeant Curt Durnil with the Bloomington Police Department said there is a strategy to choosing those dates.

“What they do is they look at the statistics from the year before and they see where there was an increase and how long that increase lasted,” Durnil said. “[It] usually has to do something with a holiday, usually has something to do with what time of year it is. In March we have March madness going on and spring break going on as well.”

In March 2009 Indiana police reported 41 fatalities. 24 percent of those accidents were alcohol related. Indiana State Coordinator for Students Against Destructive Decisions Jim Noffsinger said initiatives such as this tend to produce positive results.

“There is data that proves that our statistics improve because of doing these things, in terms of crashes and all those vital statistics that are important to us,” Noffsinger said.
