Larry Bird has been with the Pacers since 2003.

Indiana Pacers owner Herb Simon announced the departure of Larry Bird Wednesday as the team‘s President of Basketball Operations.

“I feel sad on the announcement that Larry is going to be leaving us,” Simon says. “Larry could have stayed here as long as he wants, but he has his own reasons…the Pacer organization appreciates everything he has done for us.”

Former team CEO Donnie Walsh returns to take over as team president with Kevin Pritchard being promoted to General Manager.

Bird says recent health problems were part of his decision to leave the team.

“I do have some health issues, my back hasn’t been that great this you, and I have a shoulder that I have to get an MRI on, and I’m sure it needs surgery, and I don’t know how long that will take to recoup,” he says.

Bird will stay on to oversee Thursday night‘s NBA Draft.
