8% Of State In Moderate Drought

Crop yields will likely decrease as a result of the drought.

The extended streak of dry weather for Indiana has landed parts of the state in low-level drought conditions.

The federal government’s U.S. Drought Monitor report released Thursday listed about 8 percent of Indiana in moderate drought. That covers all or part of 12 counties from the Indiana-Illinois state line near Terre Haute to just west of Indianapolis and south to the Bloomington area.

About 30 percent of Indiana is considered abnormally dry. That’s an area from near Evansville to around Indianapolis, along with the northern tier of counties across the entire state.

The National Weather Service has recorded about 2.7 inches of rainfall in Terre Haute since Aug., or 4 inches less than normal. The 2.4 inches of rain in Indianapolis during that time is 3.5 inches below normal.
