President Donald Trump gave his first State of the Union address Tuesday night. As NPR reports, it was billed as a bid for unity, a call for all to rise above party and faction in pursuit of national ideas and ideals.
But although it was one of the longest State of the Union speeches in history at close to an hour and half long, Trump didn't give many new details about policy.

With descriptions ranging from "powerful" to "disappointing," here's what Indiana officials have to say about Trump's speech:
Sen. Joe Donnelly (D)
"I'm pleased that President Trump spoke about continuing the economic growth that our country has enjoyed for the last several years," Donnelly said in a statement. "But we have more work to do to ensure every Hoosier who wants a job has one, to prevent the outsourcing of American jobs, and to realign our trade policies to benefit hardworking men and women across our country."
Joe was joined by @SenToddYoung and @RepTrey to welcome @GenDaveGoldfein, Chief of Staff of the @usairforce, to @NAVSEACrane. They discussed Crane's role in the national defense, potential avenues for an increased Air Force presence at Crane. Read Joe's statement: pic.twitter.com/lHikIqJVtF

I fought the Obama administration's dangerous efforts to close Gitmo. I'm grateful @POTUS is keeping this critical national security tool in place. #SOTU

Rep. Jim Banks (R-3rd District)
"In his speech, President Trump reflected on the significant accomplishments of 2017 and outlined an agenda to create a more safe, strong and proud America moving forward," Banks said in a statement. "I am hopeful that tonight's address will yield bipartisan cooperation on important issues like rebuilding our military, rolling back egregious regulations and strengthening our national security."
Rep. Todd Rokita (R-4th District)
Thanks to @POTUS @RealDonaldTrump's leadership, the forgotten men and women of this country have a voice in the White House and I'm proud to be an ally to drain the swamp and make our nation great again. #SOTU

Rep. Luke Messer (R-6th District)
"2017 was a great year! We delivered on several of President Trump's key agenda items and tonight he laid out another bold, optimistic vision for 2018," Messer said in a statement. "Under President Trump's leadership, unemployment is at record lows, the economy is booming, and Hoosier workers are keeping more of their paychecks. I look forward to continue working with the President to keep delivering for Hoosiers."
Rep. Andre Carson (D-7th District)
"Tonight's speech did little to repair the damage of the last year," Carson said in a statement. "No matter how much I disagree with the President's ideology, policies, and approach to the presidency, I remain committed to working with anyone who has the best interests of my constituents and the American people at heart ... But, as through the last year, I will stand firmly opposed to any effort that will hurt those I represent or further divide our nation."
