Civil War Diary: 'We Look Up Line Of March For The Other Side Of The River'

157 years ago, a Hoosier from Monroe County wrote about fighting for the Union in the Civil War in a diary he kept almost daily. Peter Thomas Matthews was 20 years old when he enlisted in the army and served as a drummer in the 19th Indiana Regimental Band.

October 5, 1861

Guard mount dispensed with tents struck at 8 ½ o clock and at 10 we look up line of march for the other Side of the River againe the edg was most excessively hot and especially for marching.  

no incident worthy of note transpired till we passed over the dam and Chesapeake Canal Aqueduck at Sargetown and had nearly reached the Arlington House.

A cuple of would-be gentlemen came rideing along the Road in a Carrige—occasionally braking the lines of march Intentionally it is supposed till coming up to the Col. 

When they ran a wheel against his horse the horse came near throwing the Col. who got very mad and heading them Called a guard and Put them under arrest

he felt for his pistols once but Did not use them he would scarsely listen for any explanation from them but gave them a Scare talking to and Demanded there names and residence and released them letting them theyed hear from him again

we then proceeded and Passed the Arlington House to past [illegible] were we encamped to Guard it. 

We are now in the center command of the Grand Army of the Potomac occupying the advanced position a place of no small honor

the Nineteenth will soon have the privilege of winning additional laurels Its name is already illustrious by its excellent Discipline exhibited at Lewinsville falls [illegible]
