Civil War Diary: 'High Compliments On The Hoosier State'

157 years ago, a Hoosier from Monroe County wrote about fighting for the Union in the Civil War in a diary he kept almost daily. Peter Thomas Matthews was 20 years old when he enlisted in the army and served as a drummer in the 19th Indiana Regimental Band.

November 28, 1861

At half Past ten the Brigade repared to Kings Head quarters the went in full Dress.

The Governor of Wisconsin was Introduced who made a Speech a very Eloquent & complimentary—he spoke considerably more about Indiana & what she as Done them about wisconsin he Past high compliments on the Hoosier State

after he had finished Col. Sol proposed three Cheers for Gov Randall & Wisconsin three for Sen King & Staff three for Gen McDowell three for the Stars & Stripes & three for George (B. McClellan) wich were roughly answered Gov Randall then proposed three cheers for Indiana Gov. Morton & the brave Hoosiers wich was well answered by the Wisconsin Volunteers

Our Band furnished all the music—we stood up—in front of the Arlington House—If the Band Did turn out first up then were not cold on we were highly complemented.

On our return to Camp Willis Reid Picked up a gold Dollar just as we finished eating our Dinners Some gentlemen from Indiana come out on a visit & we had to Play then Connor the Post Master of Indianapolis & Col Colgrave of the 27th Ind were amongst the visitors

we had Dress Parade at four oclock at wich Col. Colgrave received us.

An order was read then Calling for volunteers for Artillery Duty for the Division Several volunteered—Spent the evening resting and writing
