What You Need To Know: 5 Primary Election Questions Answered

The Indiana primary election is on Tuesday, May 3. Experts say the Hoosier state will be critical in the presidential primary, prompting candidates to begin campaign efforts here, and contested U.S. and Indiana House and Senate races have sparked debates and controversy. Are you prepared for election day?

1. When can I vote?

Early voting began earlier this month and will be available until noon on May 2. You can vote at your County Clerk's Office during their scheduled hours.

Polls are open on election day from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. local time.

2. Where can I vote?

You must vote at the location for your registration. You can find your polling place HERE.

3. Who is on my ballot?

All voters, Republicans and Democrats, will vote in the presidential primary and the U.S. Senate Republican primary. All nine U.S. House districts are up for a contested primary in one or both parties.

4. What's a delegate, anyway?

You will vote for a delegate, who is a person that will attend the state convention to vote for three state-wide positions: lieutenant governor, superintendent, and attorney general. The state delegates will also choose national delegates, who will go to the national conventions for each party and vote for the candidate.

Some of these delegates are bound to districts, which are determined by the state or county party leadership. For example, Monroe County Democratic delegates are elected by county council district, while Monroe County Republican delegates are elected by township.

Some of the delegates are bound to vote for the candidate chosen by popular vote, but others are un-bound and can vote for the candidate they choose regardless of popular vote.

Live results for the presidential primary election, all statewide elections, and select county-level elections will be posted on our Elections website.
