Weather Update, 5:30 P.M.: NWS Confirms Two Monday Tornadoes

Severe Weather

5:30 P.M. UPDATE

A National Weather Service survey team confirms a EF1 tornado with 90 MPH winds touched down briefly in the northeast tip of the Heritage Lake area in Putnam County last night. The tornado damage was found in an area 12 miles northeast of Greencastle.

Bartholomew County has been added to the list of counties under a travel advisory. Brown, Knox and Scott counties were added earlier today. An advisory means "routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and individuals should use caution or avoid those areas."

Duke Energy is reporting more than 9,000 people are without power, more than 6,000 are in Bartholomew County. Just less than 800 residents in Brown County are without power.

Weather status by county as well as delays and closings being reported to WFIU and WTIU News may be found here.

12:30 P.M. UPDATE

In a preliminary statement, the National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-0 tornado briefly touched down in Pine Village in Warren County, 18 miles west of Lafayette.

"The tornado was observed by a trained spotter briefly touching down in corn fields and producing no damage other than to the crops at the touchdown point," the statement says.

An EF-0 tornado produces winds between 65–85 miles per hour.

In addition, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security has issued a travel advisory in Brown and Knox counties. An advisory means "routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and individuals should use caution or avoid those areas."

The Brown County Democrat reports local officials and emergency personnel are considering the county a "disaster" because of flooding.

The Columbus Republic reports:

The Brown County Community YMCA is open as an emergency shelter for anyone who has been displaced from their home as a result of the flooding. A "cooling station" has also been established there for those in need of temporary relief from the heat, a drink of water, or to charge mobile phones.

The God's Grace clothing mission at Brown County Presbyterian Church on State Road 135 North will be open on an as-needed basis today, as will the Salvation Army food pantry on South Jefferson Street. Arrangements for emergency provisions should be made directly with those agencies.

At 11 a.m., Duke Energy and South Central Indiana REMC electric utilities are reporting more than 4,400 Brown County customers without power at 11 a.m., with unknown service restoration times. Citizens should prepare for long-term power outages.

10:00 A.M. UPDATE

There was a brief tornado touchdown last night in "very rural" areas west of Lafayette, according to Dave Tucek, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. But he says most damage around the state came from flooding and high winds.

Tucek says overflowing rivers are their main concern for the rest of the week, especially around the Wabash and Ohio rivers.

"Interstate 65 is actually closed at this moment, from water flooding over that, from one of the rivers that runs through that area, so we do anticipate that we are going to be experiencing some substantial river flooding for at least the next several days," Tucek says.

More than 14,000 Duke Energy customers are without power. According to Duke's website, the outages in Bloomington have been restored, but there are around 7,000 without power in the Columbus area.

32,000 Indianapolis Power &Â Light customers are without power.

The Republic reports that a long list of Bartholomew County roads are closed due to flooding.

6:30 A.M. UPDATE

The National Weather Service is expected to investigate a possible tornado touchdown in Tippecanoe County. The radar indicated there was some rotation 12 miles northwest of Lafayette at 9:01 p.m., prompting a Tornado Warning.

More than 18,000 Duke Energy customers are without power including 2700 in Bloomington and more than 5000 in Columbus.

35,000 Indianapolis Power and Light customers are without power.

IPL called in extra help after Monday afternoon's wave of severe storms that caused significant damage to power lines and equipment. Those crews from Nashville arrived overnight. IPL officials say work will continue at least into Wednesday to restored power to all impacted customers.

11:05 UPDATE

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for far southern Indiana until 5 a.m. Primary threats include damaging winds with gusts to 75 MPH, large hail events to 1.5 inches in diameter and the development of a tornado. The tornado watch remains in effect for much of the rest of Indiana until 3 a.m.

Local storm reports indicate trees down in Brown Co. due to 50 MPH winds, one inch hail in Danville, Indianapolis and Monrovia and four inches of water on SR 39 and York Road in Hendricks Co.

Duke Energy is reporting almost 9,000 residents are without power and IPL reports more than 15,000 are without power in Indianapolis.

Weather status by county as well as delays and closings being reported to WFIU and WTIU News may be found here.

9:55 UPDATE

A trained spotter reported a funnel cloud 5 miles northeast of Greencastle earlier tonight. National Weather Service officials issued a tornado warning due to cloud rotation on radar, but no confirmed tornadoes at this time.

No tornado warnings now, but severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect for a supercell thunderstorm between Indianapolis and Bloomington moving southeast at 25 MPH.

Weather status by county as well as delays and closings being reported to WFIU and WTIU News may be found here.

8:50 UPDATE

Forecasters at the National Weather Service say a second severe weather outbreak is possible this evening and tonight. Damaging winds, heavy rain and flash flooding are possible as a frontal boundary remains over southwestern Indiana while a strong jet stream moves overhead. Large hail, a few tornadoes and deadly lightning are also possible.

A tornado watch remains in effect for much of Indiana until 3 a.m.

Weather status by county as well as delays and closings being reported to WFIU and WTIU News may be found here.

6:05 UPDATE

A thunderstorm watch for far southern Indiana remains in effect until 8:00 p.m.

More than 100 Indianapolis Power & Light workers are trying to restore power to 32,000 customers affected by today's severe weather. IPL issued a statement indicating crews will work throughout the night to repair significant damage to power lines and equipment. More than 700 incidents have been reported throughout IPL's service territory as of 5 p.m. Officials there warn restoration efforts could go into Wednesday.

Residents outside of Indianapolis without power are mainly along the I-65 corridor. Duke Energy reports 22 people without power in Greenwood, 36 in Franklin, 26 in Columbus and 31 in Seymour.

Weather status by county as well as delays and closings being reported to WFIU and WTIU News may be found here.

3:05 UPDATE

The thunderstorm watch that was in effect until 4 p.m. for most of south central Indiana is canceled. The threat of severe weather is over, though a thunderstorm watch for far southern Indiana is in effect until 8:00 p.m.

Storm reports from the National Weather Service indicate trees and power lines are down by the Steak 'N Shake on US 50 in Seymour. A trained spotter in Columbus reports numerous trees are down along US 31 between Columbus and Seymour making the drive impassible in a few spots.

Weather reports call for another round of severe weather later tonight across portions of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.

Weather status by county as well as delays and closings being reported to WFIU and WTIU News may be found here.

1:30 UPDATE

A line of thunderstorms swept through Indiana today snapping trees and damaging buildings. Forecasters at the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning at 1:15 p.m. for Jennings County due to radar indicating cloud rotation. Law enforcement in the area reported a funnel cloud near Country Squire Lakes.

Storm reports from the National Service include 61 MPH thunderstorm winds in Indianapolis, a concrete plant roof blown off in West Lafayette and numerous trees down throughout the state. WTHR is reporting an injured driver in Zionsville due to a falling tree. Greencastle spotters reported 1.33 inches of rain within a half hour.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 4:00 p.m. for central and southern Indiana. A thunderstorm watch for far southern Indiana is in effect until 8:00 p.m.

Weather status by county as well as delays and closings being reported to WFIU and WTIU News may be found here.

ORIGINAL STORY

Forecasters say to beware of 70 MPH winds, heavy rain and flash flooding today and tonight as a frontal boundary over southwestern Indiana clashes with a strong jet stream. Other impacts could include two inch hail, a few tornadoes and frequent deadly lightning strikes.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 4:00 p.m. for central and southern Indiana.

Storm chances will continue on Tuesday, especially in central and southern Indiana. Forecasters also call for warm and very humid conditions with afternoon highs in the lower 90s and a Heat Index rating exceeding 100 degrees.

Review your severe weather safety procedures for the possibility of dangerous weather today.
