Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight

Following a trip to Italy, Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight says he met with other manufacturing companies than just a planned confab with automaker Fiat.

Kokomo mayor Greg Goodnight is back from an economic development trip to Italy, where he met with officials from automaker Fiat.  But the mayor had far more meetings with other manufacturing companies. Since planning for the trip began,  Goodnight has been tight-lipped about which firms he planned to try to sell on investing in Kokomo.  Speaking on WFIU’s “Ask the Mayor” Wednesday, he offered a few clues:

“Some of them in light manufacturing, there was one involved in heavy manufacturing,” Goodnight said. “Some of these businesses — for example the one in heavy manufacturing — is really looking at putting a distribution center in the Midwest.”

But when pressed on what the companies actually make, Goodnight cited concerns about the negotiations being in their early stages and would give only this tidbit:

“The metals manufacturing business, I’ll leave it at that.”

The mayor said a meeting with Fiat offered more than he had hoped.  Goodnight says officials pointed out they don’t plan to close plants in Kokomo, but that future closures depend on the health of the worldwide automotive industry.
