A Color Theme

I want to try a sunny border with a color scheme of sumptuous burgundy and pink. (Kondo Yukihiro)

At this time of year we are tempted by all of the plants that are available, and we want to grow them all!

I have been thinking about color-themed beds. For example, I want to try a sunny border with a color scheme of sumptuous burgundy and pink. I got the idea when I saw the ruffled Heuchera ‘Forever Purple' and Heuchera Dolce® ‘Cinnamon Curls' that have unique red and purple foliage that look perfect for edging beds.

I could plant a layer of Weigela ‘My Monet Sunset' behind them. These short shrubs, growing only two feet tall, have pink, cream, and green leaves that turn red in the fall. They have dark pink blooms in the spring.

Behind them, I could put a row of Hydrangea ‘Let's Dance' that grows to a maximum of three feet and re-blooms all summer with rich pink blossoms.

At the very back, I could plant a line of tall Sambucus ‘Black Lace' that has dark, lacy foliage and grows to a height of six feet and is as wide. By spacing the plants close together I could keep maintenance to a minimum, especially if I sprinkled some granules of weed-suppressing PREEN around the bed each spring.

Now I wonder how much that would cost?

Note:

  • I saw these plants in the Jackson and Perkins Garden Guide (jacksonandperkins.com).
