Willson: The Music Man

You might consider Meredith Willson's musical theater masterpiece The Music Man to be a "love letter" to his home town. Born and raised in Mason City, Iowa, Willson found many sources of inspiration in friends, family and events from his childhood as he wrote his first musical. After years of looking for a producer to showcase his work to the public, the show finally opened on Broadway in 1957 and immediately became a smash hit. It won five Tony Awards that year, beating out Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story for the Best Musical nod, and the original cast album was the first Broadway album to win a Grammy Award.
