Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904): THE GOLDEN SPINNING WHEEL

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra; Nikolaus Harnoncourt, composer. Dvořák: Piano Concerto / The Golden Spinning Wheel (Teldec)

This work shows that things made of gold are not always valuable to their owner. Dvořák's tone poem The Golden Spinning Wheel is based on a poem from the collection of Czech folk poetry known as Kytice by Karel Jaromir Erben. The poem tells the story of a young maiden who is engaged to a king. However, the maiden's evil stepsister intervenes, by murdering and dismembering the maiden, and then trying to pose as her so she can marry the king instead! A magician comes to the rescue. He gathers the maiden's dismembered parts from the evil stepsister by trading them, piece by piece, for parts of a golden spinning wheel. The stepsister is at first delighted to receive a golden treasure. However, after the golden spinning wheel is assembled, it begins to sing, and it tells the king the truth about the maiden. The king finds the maiden, now reassembled by the magician, and they live happily ever after.
