Beethoven: Symphony No 6, First Movement

While Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, the "Pastoral", is not the first piece to depict nature in symphonic fashion, it is certainly one of the composer's most familiar works. Beethoven strove to create a programmatic symphony that focused on expressing feelings rather than depicting a literal story line. In fact, each of the symphony's five movements has a programmatic title that indicates the mood of that particular movement. The Sixth Symphony premiered in 1808 on the same concert program as the composer's more famous-and more fiery- Fifth Symphony, Both of these works have since become standard works in the orchestral repertoire and favorites among classical music listeners.
