Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714–1787), Orfeo ed Euridice: Act II Ballet and Chorus

Monteverdi Choir; English Baroque Soloists; John Eliot Gardiner, conductor

Orfeo Ed Euridice (Philips)

We've talked about the myth of Orpheus before on the Ether Game podcast, one of the most enduring Greek myths, especially in the classical music world (Orpheus, after all, was a musician). In this famous retelling of the myth by 18th-century opera composer Gluck, Orpheus has begun his treacherous journey underground into the underworld to fetch his beloved Eurydice. There he is greeted by a chorus who warn of the dangers that lie within. Those horrors include the Furies, the goddesses of vengeance who can overwhelm him with a frightful dance. More frightening is the so-called "hound of Hades" Cerberus, the monstrous three-headed guard dog who keeps the souls of the dead within. Gluck imitates the three barks of Cerberus with three sliding figures in the double basses, a very convincing sonic effect.
