What constitutes a musical leftover? (The answer is below) Don't forget to tune into the full show on Tuesdays at 8:00pm for a chance to win a prize!

Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) Simple Symphony, Op. 4: Frivolous Finale

Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

album: Prokofiev/Britten/Bizet: Symphonies

How is this a musical leftover? Each of the eight melodies from the Simple Symphony, not just the Frolicsome FInale, but also the Boisterous Bouree, Playful Pizzicato and Sentimental Sarabande, are all leftover themes from piano pieces that Britten wrote as a boy in 1923. Each melody already had a life as part of a piano suite or sonata, and Britten dug up the old scores and repurposed the piano music into a new chamber suite for small orchestra or string quartet.
